Prenatal Paternity Test
Patients who wish to determine paternity before the baby is born can have a prenatal paternity test between week 12 and week 21 of their pregnancy.
Like a standard paternity test, the prenatal test compares the baby's DNA profile with the DNA of the alleged father. Because the baby's DNA is determined at conception, the prenatal test yields the same conclusive results as the standard paternity test.
Samples required by the Prenatal Paternity Test: Presumed father: Saliva sample. Mother: Saliva sample + 14 ml of amniotic fluid (*)
(*) About the procedure for sampling (Amniotic fluid): To obtain samples from the child in the mother's womb, a Gynecologist will use the amniocentesis procedure (Guided by ultrasound, the Gynecologist uses a long needle to extract the fluid through the mother's abdomen).
Because this procedure is invasive, there are some slight medical risks that the mother should discuss with her Gynecologist.
